The nervous system controls and regulates every cell and function of your body. When your body is not at 100{9af40bf80e52f11aa5d7472b6ee2426c1e641e46093dbc3d29b8bc21a0ebb17e}, you are susceptible to be unhealthy and if you are unhealthy you can get sick! That is a fact that cannot be argued.

I like to ask my patients the following question: What organ do you think is the most important organ in the body? Was the heart the first organ you thought of? That is what most people say. I rarely get someone with the correct answer. The correct answer. The brain!

Have you ever heard of someone getting a brain transplant? You can remove or replace any part of the human body and still live, but you cannot remove the brain. It is the organ that allows everything else to function. It does this by sending messages through the nervous system to the various parts of the body in its attempt to continually maintain homeostasis.

Nervous system  interruption can result from trauma or postural distortions that are easily revealed with a few simple tests. We’ve simplified a few of them to allow you to perform them in your own home with no equipment and training. It should go without saying that obviously, they don’t replace the information you can receive from a complete chiropractic evaluation.

Look carefully at the pictures or watch the video if it is available and follow the instructions to perform the tests. Just watching one hour of TV should open your eyes. They promote Drug X and give you all the side effects ranging from.

Patients have been shown to develop offspring that look like a Golden Retriever” all the way to “death has been reported in some instances”  Then consider the fact that they are selling you a product on TV that you cannot go to the store and buy yourself. They want you to go to your doctor, tell him or her  what you saw on TV and encourage them to prescribe it to you. What happened to go to your doctor, let them evaluate your condition and make their own unbiased recommendations? Pharmaceutical companies and the AMA are behind it all and it is all about influence, money and controlling people.

Your best defense is to stay healthy, and take care of your spine better than you take care of your teeth. Neglected, spinal problems may worsen and make correction more difficult and expensive later. Think about the toothache which evolved in to a root canal. The symptoms of a toothache came way after the underlying problem began.

So let’s look at what we can do today.

Cervical (Neck) Range of Motion Test
Common condition such as headaches, neck and shoulder pain can result from reduced range of motion of your neck. This is something we see in our practice every day. It’s one of the most common problems that alert patients that there is something wrong going on in the neck area. There is a simple test that can be performed and if positive, can indicate that you most likely will be able to be helped by chiropractic care.

Cervical Flexion and Extension Range of Motion Test
With the subject comfortably seated in a straight back chair, the examiner should now rest their hands gently on the subject’s shoulders to affirm contact. Next, ask the subject to close their eyes during the next minute or two that it takes for you to perform the test. Now, just to warm them up, have them slowly touch their chin to their chest and then extend the head back while looking up towards the ceiling. Remind them to continue to keep their eyes closed. Have them do this three times and then have them rest in a neutral position facing forward.
While continuing to rest their hands gently on the subject’s shoulders, the examiner now asks the subject to keep their shoulders still and rotate their head fully to the left and hold for a few seconds. Remember, the eyes are still closed.

For the examiner; look over the subject’s head and make note how far the nose moves to the left because you will be comparing it to the movement to the right.

Ask the subject if they feel any discomfort such as a pinch on the side they are turning to or a pull on the side they are turning away from. One of these findings along with a reduction of movement in any direction is a positive finding.

Once again, while continuing to rest their hands gently on the subject’s shoulders, the examiner now asks the subject to keep their shoulders still and rotate their head fully to the right and hold for a few seconds. Remember, the eyes are still closed.

For the examiner; look over the subject’s head and make note how far the nose moves to the right. Make a mental note regarding whether the nose whenas far to the right as the left and vice versa.

Ask the subject if they feel any discomfort or pain while doing any of these movements.

Assessment

  • Did the subject feel any pain or report any discomfort while performing any of the maneuvers?
  • Was the rotation equal in both right and left rotation?
  • Was there any pain when the subject had their head in extension during the initial warm-up?
  • Was there any “popping” or grinding sounds during any of the movements?
  • If the answer to number 4 was yes, could the grinding sounds be repeated over and over?

Leg Length Test
Determines low back involvement and pelvic instability.

Have the person being tested wear a pair of hard soled shoes and lie face down with your face pointing straight down. It helps to put a pillow on each side of the cheeks to allow this position while still having the subject breathe. The arms should remain relaxed along both sides.
Apply equal pressure with both hands to the bottom of the soles while leveling the heels in a parallel plane. Is one heel shorter than the other? Move on to step 3.
Some authorities say that a difference of more than ¼ inch in any leg position is clinically significant. Apparent uneven leg length is commonly seen in the population. In fact, when you go to have your pants hemmed, the tailor may make the comment that everyone has a leg length discrepancy. That’s like saying that everyone has one arm longer than the other. It’s not true and your tailor should stick to tailoring.

What is really happening is that a good part of the population has a lumbar or pelvic imbalance which creates the visual leg length discrepancy. This is more common in men as they typically lead a more active life with the involvement of sports where even as a youth you could suffer a hard fall playing ice hockey or a hit in football or a slide in baseball. At a young age, our bodies adapt to these micro traumas. But much like if you got hit in the mouth so hard that your teeth went crooked from the impact. If you do nothing about the alignment of the teeth, they will rest crooked where they are. You don’t feel pain from it after the initial recovery from the impact.

Our bodies will adapt to our environment when we develop habits such as women carrying a purse or diaper bag over the same shoulder on a daily basis. These results in that the shoulder is being overused by continually firing the muscle groups involved that pull upward thereby affecting the neck and shoulder areas.

For men, the most common thing I see is that most guys put their wallet in the same back pocket all the time and when they sit down, it’s not that they sit on the wallet; it is that they favor and lean away from the side of the wallet for comfort purposes. Thereby, adding to or even creating the pelvic imbalance.

Your body just adapts and moves on. Same thing happens with the spine except when we get older, less active and overweight, the body begins to show the signs of time as it eventually finds it more difficult to adapt due to ageing, gravity and the pollutants in our food, air and water.

Carpal Tunnel & Chiropractic

Firmly hold the tops of your hands together with your fingers pointing down towards the floor. While positioning your arms parallel to the floor, hold this position for one full minute. If in the process of doing this you experience pain, numbness, tingling or any combination, you may very well have nerve involvement.

This sits right over where the carpal tunnel lies. Positive symptoms are pain over the route of the median nerve which heads up the arm.

This is a test where we will compare one hand against the other to measure strength. It really has no bearing on how strong you are but more to the ability to keep your thumb and pinky together while the examiner pulls them apart. Then compare it to the other hand.

If there is involvement or pressure on the median nerve, the power, so to speak will be turned down or off completely and the subject will not be able to keep the two digits together.

If there is significant difference between the two hands, that is a positive sign for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
