What to Expect
Many individuals get apprehensive when going to a new doctor for the first time. The reason for that nervousness is that you really just don’t know what to expect. If it’s your first time to a chiropractor, chances are you just figure the doctor is going to ask you where it hurts and begin treatment. Our goal is to eliminate every shred of apprehension and make you feel at home.
One of the most important things about making you comfortable is that we want you to know who we are, what we do and why we do it. The more you know and understand, the better results you’ll enjoy. It’s that simple.
Types and Choices of Care
Chiropractic care helps your body heal itself. At Life Point Chiropractic, we offer you three options for care (when appropriate). What you choose will depend on the severity of your condition and your own health goals. It’s up to you to determine how far you want to go with your own treatment and how much better you want to feel. You are in control! Your ultimate goal should not be satisfied with just a band-aid, or temporary relief care, but aspire to achieve and maintain the highest possible level of health and maintain it.
We’ve been in practice in the South County communities since 1987. Our approach is straight forward. We know that health is among our most valuable possessions. Unfortunately, we generally meet people after they have sustained an injury or have developed a challenge in their health and vitality. Our commitment is two-fold:
Most individuals seeking care in our office have one goal in mind: RELIEF. So that is obviously the place to put our emphasis. It is also our commitment to look at the big picture to see what could be the cause and source of the problem; we look at the body as a whole, not just for signs and symptoms.
A good analogy is that you go to the Dentist because you have a toothache. We understand that the actual symptom is coming from some structural defect with your teeth or gums. During your initial stage of chiropractic care, as your doctor I have the obligation to not only locate the cause of the symptom, but to also promote the benefits of overall wellness by treating the underlying problem.
As stated in our Pledge To Our Patients (see far right tab), our hopes are for you to have the highest level of health possible. We encourage our patients to adopt an awareness of a healthy lifestyle with natural health solutions. Through educational awareness (like this website), we hope to communicate the value of ongoing supportive chiropractic care.
In many cases, natural remedies may be suggested in lieu of taking medications which usually come along with many uncomfortable and dangerous side-effects. Just watch a commercial and listen to all the side effects. Our desire is to see our patients abandon the prevailing sickness care model of health (symptom-oriented), in favor a more popular and accepted wellness model. Pro-Active Wellness.
If you are already a chiropractic patient and are new in town and just looking for a new doctor, someone to accept your insurance plan or if you have not had results from your present doctor, we welcome you with open arms and will make the transition to our office as smooth as possible. If possible, we will continue to use the techniques and treatments that have proven successful for you in the past.

Make Yourself at Home
You’ll find plenty of convenient parking and a well-lit parking lot. You will be greeted with a smile and warm welcome. You may download your initial paperwork from this website and bring it to your initial visit or just fill it out when you arrive at our office. Then you are ready to meet Dr. Hawn.
We Explain Everything First
The purpose of your consultation with the doctor is to discuss your health goals and see if chiropractic is likely to help you. If we believe that yours is a chiropractic case, we will do a thorough examination which will help us identify the cause of your problem.
We ask you to complete your new patient forms in as much detail as as you can. To find out if we can help you, we ask questions and listen. If we decide to accept your case we will perform an examination and if needed order x-rays of the injured area to rule out pathology. Less than 25{9af40bf80e52f11aa5d7472b6ee2426c1e641e46093dbc3d29b8bc21a0ebb17e} of our patients require x-rays. But if you have existing X-rays or an MRI from another doctor or facility, please bring those with you. Once our exam is complete, if possible we will initiate some relief care to make you more comfortable.
After we study your health history, correlate our examination findings, and evaluate your response to any relief care provided on visit one, we’ll make recommendations designed to help you regain and keep your health. We call this the Report of Findings.
This is usually attended to on your second visit. Depending on whether we need x-rays or not, it may be later the same day or the following day. This two-visit approach accomplishes several things:
- Gives us time to correlate our findings
- Avoids overloading you with too much information
- Affords you the opportunity to bring in your spouse to hear our recommendations without having something lost in translation
- Allows you the opportunity to ask all the questions you need regarding your care and treatment
Based on our exam and your response to any treatment from the prior visit, we’ll report what we have determined to be your problem. With that information we can make our recommendations to you. An educated patient is a better patient so we will explain everything in detail so that you understand what is going on in your body. We want to make certain we answer every question and concern that you may have. At this time, we’ll determine if we feel we can help you and if so, you will be accepted and invited to be a patient in our office.
Understanding Chiropractic
Chiropractic healthcare is the branch of the healing arts, which is based on the scientific principle that our nervous system controls or influences the function of all 11 trillion interconnected cells in our body. The term “Chiropractic” comes from the Greek words “chiro and praktikos” meaning “done by hand.”
The Chiropractic or wellness model of health is centered on the philosophy that the human body will heal itself given the right opportunity. In other words the body heals from the inside out. No Doctor or medicine has ever healed anyone of anything. Only the body can heal itself and chiropractors as healers just facilitate it with our trained “healing” abilities.
Interference to the nervous system, caused by a vertebral subluxation complex (what we all know as a misaligned vertebra or spinal bone) will affect how the nervous system relates to the cells to which it influences.
Think of nerve irritation like a dimmer switch on your lights. If the dimmer is turned down, the lights are still on, but the light is low. If it is turned up too high, the bulb may burn out prematurely. Therefore the muscle or organ still receives the nerve impulse, however it is altered. This helps to explain why when nerve irritation exists in the middle back region, an individual may experience indigestion or an upset stomach. Doctors of Chiropratic (DC’s) essentially promote the healing process by minimizing interference to the nervous system. By detecting and correcting nerve interference, Doctors of Chiropractic facilitate the healing process, but it is still the power within your body that does all the healing.
A typical visit to our office does not take a lot of time out of your day. Though brief in comparison to your initial visit, your subsequent office visits are very important! It is our hope that you take advantage of the expertise of Dr. Hawn and his three decades of treating patients.
