Allergies. . .Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment
Does Chiropractic help?
Chiropractic care is becoming more and more popular these days, not only because it addresses certain conditions of the muscles and the bones, but it also provides relief for allergies.
Yes, you read it right – allergies. What most people do not know is that chiropractic care is also being used to alleviate the problems caused by allergies which includes sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, throat and even skin rashes. As a matter of fact, a lot of people who utilize chiropractic care claim that they really have experienced significant improvement in these conditions since they started receiving regular chiropractic care as part of their health regime.
Does that mean chiropractic can cure allergies?
No, it can’t. Although there are a lot of people who use chiropractic mention that they really experience a significant health improvement since they started receiving chiropractic care, chiropractic cannot treat the allergy itself. It treats the cause of named diagnoses, not the diagnosis itself.
Then, how does chiropractic help patients with allergies?
Let’s look at it this way. There are different types of allergens that could trigger allergic reaction. However, not all of us are affected, because if we were, then we could easily put the blame on egg, shellfish or pollen and create a solution. But this is not the case because in reality, one can be allergic to something, and some may not. Why?
An example would be like if someone squeezed your wrist for a prolonged period of time. It is reasonable to believe that the hand and fingers might begin to hurt or even go numb. You could play with the hand and fingers and even take a medication for it until the cows come home but until you remove the pressure at the wrist which is causing the symptoms of pain and numbness in the hand, it will never get better. This is how chiropractic works. We look for the cause of dysfunction and attempt to remove it. Just like removing the pressure off the wrist.
Our nervous system controls and coordinates all the other body systems including the respiratory system, digestive system, glandular system and the immune system and each of these demonstrates a particular reaction when exposed inappropriately to an allergen. Typically, these systems protect or help you adapt to the world around you.
However, there are times that your nervous system isn’t working right and therefore you cannot adapt. And if the nervous system is not functioning correctly, it doesn’t work right. Then you will not work right.
This is when you experience a runny/stuff nose, uncontrollable sneezing, skin irritation, headache and shortness of breath. Therefore, instead of directing our attention to each individual allergen, we minimize symptoms by locating and removing the nerve intereference problems we have in the command center – the nervous system.
What is the “adaptation bucket”?
Adaptation bucket is a term used to describe one’s capacity to adapt or withstand stress. Everyday, we are exposed to various stresses which could be physical, chemical or emotional. If we are unable to deal with a particular stressor, it means that your ability to adapt is already used up. Your “bucket” is full. And whenever you are having an allergic reaction, it is the same as saying “My adaptation bucket is already full and I have lost my capacity to withstand stress.”
Chiropractic and the Nervous System
So once again, Chiropractic care does not treat the allergy, instead, it helps you increase your ability to fight off stress by determining and minimizing the problems you have in your nervous system. Sound simple? Well, it really is.

If the cause of your condition is related to the misalignment of one or more vertebra which is directly affecting the flow of nerve impulses to your body’s organs and tissues, you need to know that only specific chiropractic adjustments to gently move your spine into balance is going to fix the cause. Medications may change the symptoms you are experiencing, but drugs have serious side effects and do not address the cause of the symptom.
The diagnosis is simple. You either have misaligned vertebra or other boney components that are out of alignment or you don’t. A good analogy is when your car’s wheels are out of alignment. The only fix is to realign your wheels.
